BIOGRAPHY
Celebrated as one of the region’s top photographers, Derek Henderson made the transition to TVC direction in July 2007 when he joined Curious Film.
As both photographer and director, Derek is known for his ability to transform everyday scenes into compelling narratives, and his work is defined by its simplicity, beauty and brazen honesty.
Born in New Zealand, Derek relocated to Sydney from London two years ago after travelling back and forth between the two cities for several years. In London, he worked with major international clients such as Mother London, i-D, Arena Homme Plus and Vogue. Back in Sydney, he’s worked with the region’s top agencies such as Publicis Mojo, DDB, The Campaign Palace, Moon and JWT, and fashion magazines such as Oyster and Vogue.
Derek has a flair for unveiling emotion in unexpected places. He transforms empty landscapes into scenes of mystique and awe, bringing seemingly unremarkable situations to life on film. He has a talent for revealing his subjects’ true character, their vulnerability and insecurities, and conveys ideas with startling honesty.
“I think good photographers have a natural sense of light and composition, and also a sensitivity and an attention to detail, which can translate beautifully to film. I like to turn the mundane into the sublime, and I love extending this curiosity into film,” says Derek.
Since joining Curious Film, Derek continues to be represented as a photographer by M.A.P. in London, New York and Australia, which represents some of the world’s most successful photographers including Philip Lorca Dicorcia and Alasdair McLennan.
Derek’s passion for fine arts distinguishes him from other directors – his first book and exhibition, The Terrible Boredom of Paradise, enchanted audiences in London, Sydney and Auckland. He’s currently working on his second documentary art project, titled ‘Waikato River’.
