BIOGRAPHY

A native New Zealander, Darryl’s knack for skilled photography, visual effects, casting and strong narrative make him one of the most widely respected directors in New Zealand & Australia today.

Darryl began his career as a photographer before moving into cinematography. His work is visually sophisticated and stylishly framed, while Darryl himself is charming, full of ideas and exceptionally literate when it comes to the language of film.

With 20 years experience, Darryl has directed over 60 commercials and acted as DOP on more than 50 music videos, commercials and films. With experience shooting in Australia, America, London, South America and Tokyo, he is known throughout the region as a trusted and esteemed director and cinematographer.

Aged 36, Darryl accepted his first role as a commercial director six years ago. Since then he has gone on to direct award-winning campaigns, one of which (Amnesty International) was awarded three bronze Clio’s, three silvers at The One Show, and a gold at Young Guns. He has created campaigns for well-loved brands such as Whittakers, AMI Insurance, Telstra, Just Jeans, TVNZ and Red Cross.

Most recently, Darryl was one of five featured Australasian directors on Shots 97. He was also selected for Board Magazine’s prestigious Directors-To-Watch list in 2006 and is the winner of a Kodak Gong in Australia. As a DOP he has received numerous awards, with seven spots included on Shots DVDs.

Between commercials, Darryl is working on a feature film based in Asia and New Zealand. He is the director behind the quirky mockumentary, ‘The Wailing Woman of Omsk’, for the International Documentary Film Festival.
